Our Learning (Year 5)

Governors At St Albert The Great

This term we will be studying biomes in geography which will involve finding out about the ten different biomes in the world whilst in history, we will be finding out about the Ancient Greeks and their legacies. This year our geography and history lessons will be taught on alternating weeks.

We will be reading Who Let the Gods Out as our class book.

In English we are following the Back on Track curriculum to help support the children by filling in any gaps that may have occurred during lockdown. We started with a two week unit based around the book Journey by Aaron Becker and will be moving on to work based on the story Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman.

In Maths we will are also using the Back on Track curriculum which aims to fill in any missing learning and reactivate knowledge that may have been forgotten as well as moving into the Year 5 curriculum. We are currently learning about place value. We have been looking at how to represent numbers in different ways, understanding the value of digits, rounding numbers and comparing and ordering numbers. In the next few weeks we will be learning about negative numbers, roman numerals and counting in steps of different multiples. Throughout all of our teaching, we are focusing on developing the children’s knowledge and understanding of mathematical vocabulary.

Our current science topic is Living Things and their Habitats.

Children will also be participating in gymnastics – focusing on balances and developing sequences – as well as tag rugby and cross country during PE.
